How to get a Google Nexus 4 in India from US!

Yes, Nexus 4. We all know all about it. We all badly want it! And we also know we can't lay our hands on it! Going by the market reports and rumours, LG isn't launching Nexus 4 in India any time soon. Even if it does, do you know what's it's price gonna be? Not Rs. 20k my dear ... going by the trend of Nexus 7 ($199 in US & Rs. 19,999 in India), one can safely assume it's going to be somewhere around ~ Rs. 28-30k for the 8 GB model and ~ Rs. 31-33k for the 16 GB version. So the question remains - why would wait for it endlessly and then pay a huge premium to buy it?

Here's a solution. Get it from the US and get it shipped to India using mail forwarding services. Only thing you'll be missing out on is the India warranty, but end up saving around Rs. 10k.

Update: My sincere apologies but Google hired me to prevent exactly this kind of abuse of its accounts and I can only explain the mail forwarding (shipping from US to India) part!

Selecting a shipping method:
There are many methods availabl
e. The basic concept is these international mail forwarding services provide you with an US address along with an unique identifier. So, whenever a package arrives with that identifier, they send you a notification along with payment options. As soon as you pay them, your product is on its way to India. Some of these also offer free storage and compilation option where you can ship 2-3 packets together and save on shipping charges.

I've updated a list originally made by an user called iamvarkey in the Nexus 4 Indian Thread at XDA Developers. Here is a comparison of the total cost for a Nexus 4 (16 GB) through different forwarding services.

Assuming USD to INR @ Rs. 54 + 3.5% Foreign Transaction charges + 12.36% service tax on Foreign Transaction charges.

PPO Box
  • Nexus 4 (16 GB) - $395 (Incl NY Tax)
  • Shipping + customs for 2lbs - Rs 2,400 (Can be insured only up to $200)
  • Total : Rs 24,400

  • Nexus 4 (16 GB) - $363 (no taxes here - their address is a tax free state!)
  • Shipping 0.5 kg - $25 (CG)/ $23 (HSG) incl insurance, fuel surcharge etc. for Standard shipping (HopShopGo is offering 10% discount for PayPal customers!)
  • Customs - Rs. 2000 incl FedEx handling fees
  • Total : Rs 23,900 (CG) / Rs 23,700 (HSG)

Borderlinx
  • Nexus 4 (16 GB) - $388 (Incl OH Tax)
  • Shipping + customs - $77 (Customs is prepaid and you need to pay the complete amount to Borderlinx along with the shipping cost and includes insurance)
  • Total : Rs 26,100

Local (Known!) Issues:
  • Maharashtra: 5.5% Octroi charges extra apart from customs
  • Delhi: Customs are being charged at higher rate (2% CVD + 4% SAD), irrespective of whether FedEx or DHL!
  • Bangalore: Extremely slow customs processing, 3-4 business days

Note that during customs they might open your phone and check. So don't be surprised if you receive an unsealed box. Just make sure it's working all right and there are no damages. That's why insurance is so important.

If you select HSG, their only accepted payment method is via PayPal. So go ahead and sign up for it. It's safe and secure. Note that it takes about 4-5 days to get your PayPal account verified, among which the most time consuming is PAN card verification.

Shipping to India:
Once your Nexus reaches your US address, your shipping/ forwarding service will give you shipping options. Select the option that suits you most. They'll again provide tracking details as it leaves its facility. Customs charges (unless it's prepaid in package - i.e. for Borderlinx) will be notified to you by email and/ or SMS. You've to pay these charges in cash once your Nexus reaches.

Note that it's important to check the package contents for damage or missing components since your shipping provider's insurance covers these and this should be done during accepting the delivery.

And DONE! You're a proud owner of a brand new Nexus! Enjoy!

Review: I'm in some serious love with this phone!! :D Here's my two pence for new buyers:

1. The phone is s#!t awesome - worth every penny and effort! Go buy it!
2. ... unless you're a rough user! Mind it, it's not a Nokia, not even an Xperia Go, or not even an S3 that it'd survive falls all the time! She's a princess and you need to treat her like one!!
3. And do order a 16 GB, or you might be regretting with ~5 GB user accessible memory (for 8 GB model) for the next 2 years!!
4. Battery isn't great - but then again most of the high end smartphones barely take you through the day with moderate data usage. Use battery saver apps and all to control data flow and save battery.
5. Don't order accessories from US. Why do you want to take such a huge risk of paying huge customs (it's 16% for accessories against 2% for mobiles and often when there are products with diff customs rates, they apply the higher rate overall!!) when you can get decent cases and screen guards from eBay India! Plus - with only phone, you'll have to pay for shipping of 0.5 kg while it'll be 1 kg for with accessories.
6. Go with HSG Standard if you don't mind an unsealed box. It's the cheapest option out there. For me, from phone being delivered to HSG to phone at my doorsteps = 1 week in Standard (FedEx) shipping!! Mind it, you need PayPal for HSG and PayPal account verification takes 4-5 working days, otherwise head to comGateway which the same but you don't need PayPal - cost is only ~ $3 more.
7. PPOBox is faster (2-3 days sooner?), and boxes are mostly left often unopened, but it's more expensive since you end up paying $33 NY taxes extra!! Moreover, their insurance cover is up to $200 only!

For further information or discussions, you can head to the Nexus 4 Indian Thread at XDA Developers.

  1. Hi Saptak,

I ordered a N4 yesterday through Google Play too.

In case you got your N4 delivered, could you tell me how much you were charged as customs duty?

Also, the last paragraph you said I should check my package for missing contents. Is insurance coverage applicable by default or do I have to specially select an insurance plan at the package forwarding service's website?

    Thanks for your help! :)

  2. can i buy it using icici debit card from google wallet?
    double charges means 349+349?

    thankyou

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hi CyN! I too ordered yesterday only. Customs have costed people between 600 & 1100. Which service are you using?

Hey gvdprasad! Yes, I think - if it allows international purchases. Just check. And what Google does is blocks $362.99 (349 + 13.99 shipping) on your card and charges once the item is shipped. But since they can't really block an amount on debit cards, they make a refundable transaction. This extra $362.99 will be refunded later - but you do need double account balance to ensure smooth transaction.

  4. Thanks for the info, Saptak.

I'm using comGateway. So, worst case scenario: my phone arrives damaged from comG, then I can ask the guy who delivers to re-send it back as it came damaged? Is that right?

How can I tell comg that I'm expecting the package to arrive at their facility in Oregon based on Google's shipping estimates? or will they just check for the unique id on the package and then update me ? please help. I'm confused.I have just registered there and they gave me a shipping address.no other information was given

  6. Hi,
I have ordered 5 nexus 4s for me and my friends. I'm using comgateway. Should I ship them all together to India as a single package, will there be any problems at customs. Or should I ship them separately to be on the safe side.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Sap,

Can you Please reply? Since I dont have an account on XDA I am not able to post my queries there. I just want to know how to inform comgateway that they should be receiving a package for me in the next 2 weeks?

    ReplyDelete
  8. @CyN: No, I think I read somewhere you need to raise a ticket with comG directly. In the mean time, you can tell the courier guy that you need to talk to them since the shipment is damaged. But if you outright reject to accept it, they might just show it as a delivery failure & send it back.

@Anon: Yes, they'll check the unique id & update the package details & tag it to your account. And you don't need to inform them. Once you see your package is delivered, they'll update it within 1-2 business days. Btw creating an account on XDA developers is free and you'll a lot more advice from many more people!

@Barry: It could be a problem. Customs people might think you're planning to resell these in India. They might ask for documents and all. Why don't you ask the same on the thread I suggested? A lot more experienced people can help you there! :)

Thanks for the post, i ordered it using HSG, but relaized later that you mentioned about PAN verification. However the paypal account got activated almost immidiately.
Would the PAN verification withhold the package forwarding?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hi Peter! Sorry, I'm not sure. But it shouldn't take much time anyway. And I think you can pay without PAN verification also. My guess would be they won't let you receive money via PayPal till the PAN verification.

Hi Thanks for everything Sap. Now my shipment is on its way to Portland. Checked the UPS tracking thingy. But I have a dilemma now :( I wanted to buy some accessories for my new Nexus 4 from Ebay. Can you suggest a good TPU case/bumper and screengaurd? And if i consolidate them with my nexus 4 once everything reaches comG how will the customs be levied in India? I read the thread in XDA which mentions the duties as 2% for phone and about 15% for accessories. What if they charge 15% for the entire shipment :( I am kinda worried. Please let me know, otherwise I'll buy the accessories once I get my Nexus 4 shipped to me place. What do u suggest??

    ReplyDelete
  16. Shashank5:54 PM

@Anyonymous: If your package is opened at the custom warehouse and they find different products then entire package shall be levied taxes at higher of any of the rate (sure).

If you say accessories are chgd @15% you can try play gamble but at very high stakes if they open the package. These accessories are already available in India @ 100-150 for three screen protectors.

  17. Anonymous8:09 PM

thanks shashank.I'd rather not take any risks at this stage. Can you suggest some good accessories for me? my budget would be 500 for screen guard and tpu or bumper

    ReplyDelete
  18. Shashank said what I had feared. That's why I avoided buying accessories in spite of checking out some awesome ones. For now, I've settled for a budget soft TPU case & a screen guard from eBay India for Rs. 400. Once the phone gains popularity in India, I believe awesome cases such as Ringke and all will be released. Till then, protect yours with something from eBay! :)

Thanks again dude. My nexus 4 has reached comg facility. I have verified it on their site using the tracking number UPS had provided. They say, they'll assign the shipments to my account in 2 business days. Now I have 2 options for shipping i.e express or standard. I can save a few bucks if I go with standard, but then standard shipping is handled by Fedex and express by DHL. I read(thanks to XDA hehe)DHL is more reliable than fedex and they don't mess up with the customs once it reaches India. I dont want to save a few bucks on standard shipping only go get screwed up by customs later. What do u suggest? Also, ringke case and nillkin cases are available on ebay India, but they're very expensive as compared to ebay.com. Which ones have you purchased? Can you please post the links in your blog? This blog has been really helpful in realising my dream(nexus 4) ;). thanks again. thumbs up!!!

Hi Sap what do u suggest, shall I go with standard shipping(by fedex i presume) or express(dhl?) Does fedex really charge exorbitant amount as customs?or is it the same with dhl? Please advise :(

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thanks Anon! Sorry for the late reply but you can go with either. Even FedEx delivers in about 6 days. And they're pretty damn good. Yes, I was getting charged more at customs but I don't believe the courier company can really have any play in how much customs will charge!! Sure they can make your customs get cleared sooner, but not cheaper!!

As for cases, I bought a soft TPU case from eBay India & I'm quite happy with it :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anonymous12:56 AM

I got it shipped thru express shipping option...after reading your post on xda I didn't want to take any risks :( 1 more guy who got it thru fedex ended up paying 1641 as customs.I know it should not be dependent on the courier services that you opt for but I was still very skeptical about it.my phone is at Cincinnati Ohio waiting eagerly to feel the warmth of my hands he he.I could've saved a few more bucks if I'd used hsg like you instead of comgateway but later I thought what if the device goes out of stock while waiting for paypal to verify my pan and proceeded with cgw.this beast has remained elusive so far..hope I'll have it by next weekend.can I buy some cases from ebay India like nillkin etc ? are they good enough?

My phone has departed from Heathrow, London. My only concerns is customs now :( Since I am from Bangalore, I hope I won't be charged exorbitantly like the guys from Delhi. At best, can I expect to have it in my hands by Wednesday?I had placed an order on 29th (US time) when the stocks were plenty, but google made me wait for about 5 days before they shipped it to Oregon. Also, I got back the excess amount that was debited from my ICICI account for Forex.

      Delete
    3. Lucky you! But yeah, Bangalore they'll take some time I suppose, but will charge reasonable duties.

As for the case, while Nexus logo is visible, the sparkle isn't :( For that you'd need a transparent case, which is not yet available in India. Till then, use a normal one - you can get a better one later. And search on eBay, you'll get plenty of options!

      Delete
    4. Anonymous11:02 PM

Ya planning to do that. I found some really sexy cases in ebay US, but didn't wanna risk higher duties so decided to buy cases in India once the phone becomes popular here :(

Since the phone is very fragile, I want to protect it with a TPU or hard rubber case. 1 nasty fall can undo all the efforts I put in to get the phone shipped from US.

Hi Spatak… I have a query. I have a Gmail account and it obviously shows country as India in account details. My question is, while registering for the Google Wallet should I use this Gmail account and modify country as USA or is it better to create a new one. I mean using existing account won’t create any problems right?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hey Anon! No, that won't be a problem. Me & many others used their normal gmail account for ordering. No need to update your country as well. Just add your billing/ shipping addresses in Google Wallet as US addresses :)

Hey Sap... Thanks! I registered with Google Wallet. Actually, I will be purchasing with Debit Card. I added the card details to the Google Wallet and also kept the Home address and Shipping address same. Now, how to confirm that the Debit card I added will work before I make final purchase of Nexus 4. I tried to buy a Free Book and it said that I can now read that online in my account. Also, my account was debited with INR 1.03. Does that solve my problem or is there anything else I should do to confirm the same?

& how much amount neccessory in Account for this transaction FROM DEBIT / CREDIT CARD?

CAN I USE OTHERS'(FRENS) CC THROUGH MY ACCOUNT?

is there any other charges for this in india (like Duty & VAT & others) ?

Is there any PAYPAL charges for this Transaction?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, all these sites are very secure and popular globally. If you head to the XDA forum, you'll find hundreds of satisfied buyers who've used such sites to buy Nexus 4 specifically!

PNB Debit Card would work if it allows foreign currency transactions. Ask your bank's customer care. Or just try registering your card on Google Wallet & try to buy something free. You'll know if it's working or not. Since it's a debit card, you'd need double amount in your account (~44k for 16 GB to be safe) since they'll deduct one while ordering and one while shipping. Within a few working days, the first charge would be refunded.

And you can always use anyone's credit card. Just make sure billing Name is your friend's name.

Other charges in India have been explained in the post. PayPal doesn't have any transactional or registration charges apart from the already included forex charges during USD to INR conversion.

I am ready to order two pcs Nexus 4. If I use PPO I have to pay $ 32 or so for each phone. It looks like they have a good handle on constant customs duty unlike HSG customers charged higher in delhi and cheaper in Bangalore.also box comes un opened it seems most of the time.
Rs 1700 usa tax per pc is a big sum.
For Hyderabad -Fedex for Normal shipping & DHL for express shipping? Any idea where is the gateway landing /custom clearing airport for these guys?
    anyone bought from Hyderabad here?

    1. Thanks pal. Well, if you order two Nexus together then you can save on shipping if you use HSG. On the other hand, PPOBox will ship immediately as soon as one phone arrives (Google might ship two phones in your order separately), so you can't really save on shipping.

For Fedex (Normal shipping), all shipments come via Delhi. However, for DHL, they take different routes. So it might come via some other gateway. Ask in the XDA forum ... some Hyd people must have ordered.

  44. Hi Saptak, I have two Nexus 4's with my sister in USA. Can I use Comgateway or Hopshopgo or any other Courier companies that you have mentioned to ship them. I live in Bangalore. I need to know whether the courier guys will pick it up from her house. Could you just go through the procedure to get it shipped from my sister's house to here in Bangalore.

    1. I'd suggest go for PPOBox. It'd be cheaper for you. And no, courier won't pick it up from her house. She needs to courier the package to PPOBox. Bangalore customs take about 3-4 working days to process. It should be around Rs. 500/- for customs for each Nexus. With PPOBox, you'll get everything done under Rs. 2k (including prepaid customs).

    2. Thanks for the speedy reply. Idid what you told me to. Will it be under 2k for each phone? Also should I send the two phones as two different orders?

      Delete
    3. I created an account on PPOBOX as told. Should i ship boyh the phones from my sis house to their ny warehouse as a single package? Also shall i send it to India as one or two different packages? What will the total cos be for each if sent individually or through same package? Should i create a new account for my friend for the second phone on PPOBOX? Will it be more cost effective?

      Delete
    4. Combine them together and ship as a single package. Make sure that the bill is visible outside the combined packing. If necessary, take a printout of the bill sent to your gmail id & attach it outside. This will be more cost effective. Then your total shipping cost should be within Rs. 2k (both phones combined, with customs).

    5. I did not seem to understand. Could you please elaborate. Which bill here are you talking about?

      Delete
    6. The invoice you got from Google during purchase stating the product and its price. It might be attached to the product or you can take a print out of your order receipt containing the price along with your name and shipping address etc.

    7. I have been asking a lot of questions. Thanks for your patience. When will the PPObox ask for payment? After the shipment arrives in their warehouse or during Entering a New Shipment? The customs is prepaid( Rs.1300/-) or needs to be paid during the delivery?

      Delete
    8. They normally ship the item immediately and ask for payment later (sometime before delivery). As I said, customs is prepaid.

And you're welcome. Though would appreciate if you click on the scrolling sidebar > Members & Join this site with Google Connect as a thank you gesture if it helped :)

    1. Hi, U can Order the Nexus 7 same way as of Nexus 4... There no difference.... All the Best

    2. Actually there is a difference. Customs for phone is 2% while for tablets (Nexus 7) it's 16%!! So you'd have a huge customs duty to pay.

  53. Hello Saptak. This is Salim from Chennai.
Really pleased to know the process. However i am bit confused. I have planned to use HSG and i have my US address assigned for me in my name. I have a credit of my Mom, which has her name. If i register this in Google Wallet with her name and make a purchase with the US Shipping address under my name given by HSG, will there be any mismatch or will Google accept and ships my order. Please help.

Also, is it possible to order a N4 today, because i just registered my credit card in PayPal for HSG, and you said it will take 4 to 5 days for verification. How does this work?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That shouldn't be a problem... your PayPal account will get verified by the time N4 is delivered to your HSG address ... and your method regarding using your mom's credit card n your name as shipping address should be fine :)

I wanted to buy an AMD 7870 GPU from Amazon, which costs about $250, from HSG, it estimated that the shipping would be $24, as the item is under 1kg. How much customs would I have to pay on top of the $274 I'm already paying?

  57. how to access playstore thru tunnel bear..
    its nt wrking for me..

  58. Hi Saptak, I have also ordered from google play. I was a bit apprehensive at first. Finally, I took a gulp and ordered it. Hope, it works out well. If it doesn't, I am screwed. The bill was 349 (device) + 13.99 (shipping) + 32.22 (tax) = US $395.21.

I guess another Rs. 1300-1400 for shipping by PPOBox.

I am keeping my fingers crossed.

  60. Hi
Thanks for your tips. Was able to purchase N4 using HSG.

Now, I noticed that Google Play is treating me as US customer.. I tried changing google account; wallet (deleted US address).. but no avail.

I saw in XDA forum that rooting and using MarketEnabler is one way.

Is there any other way? Did you change your country?

    Thanks
